FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Highland Ridge Assisted Living and a nursing home the same?

No.  Assisted Living communities in Kentucky are defined and regulated differently than nursing homes.  For example both assisted living and nursing homes can provide assistance with ADL’s (activities of daily living bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, transferring). However, nursing homes can deliver health care services, while a client in an assisted living community must directly arrange with an outside agency or person to receive health care services.  Generally, assisted living communities offer more privacy and independence, because each client has a separate unit, including a bedroom with a private bathroom, a kitchenette and living area.  Each unit has a lockable door, private bathroom, individual thermostat controls etc.

What services and arrangements are provided by an Highland Ridge?

The client can receive assistance with activities of daily living, as well as assistance with self-administering his/her own medication.  All meals, housekeeping, transportation, laundry and clerical services are also available.  Arrangements can be made with an outside agency or person to receive health care services, subject to any related policy of the assisted living community.

Can Highland Ridge provide me with transportation to the doctor, hairdresser, etc.?

Yes, we are required to provide you with transportation.  Arrangements can be made prior to appointments and there is an additional charge. (However hairdresser services are available at the facility.)

Can someone help me take my medication?

Yes.  The staff can, at your request, assist you in self-administering your own medication.  Reminders can be given,  help in opening containers etc. can be given.  However, employees can’t touch the actual medication. You must arrange with an outside agency such as a doctor, pharmacist, home health agency or family member to advise you about the appropriateness of the medication.  Most clients find the simplest method is for the meds to be placed in a weekly planner by one of the above mentioned persons.

Can I bring my furniture and furnishings for my living unit?

Yes, we encourage clients to bring their own furniture, keepsakes, etc. to maintain the homey atmosphere for their enjoyment.
